As one of central London&rsquo;s royal residences, Kensington Palace has been a home and refuge to the royal family since the 17th century. Now, it is the official residence of the Prince and Princess of Wales. Built in 1605, it has roots in Jacobean architecture and was first known as Nottingham House. William III and Mary II were crowned jointly in 1689, and were instrumental in transforming Nottingham House into Kensington Palace.

When Queen Mary died from smallpox in 1694, William was overcome with grief. Despite this he finished the building with a grand gallery at the south of the Palace, enlarging Sir Christopher Wren&rsquo;s original plan. Now it is one of London&rsquo;s most exquisite palaces and comes with acres of manicured gardens and the world-famous Orangery.

Once you&rsquo;ve seen all there is to see inside, take a wander around the 30-acres of Palace Garden and explore this oasis right in the heart of the capital. Old Royal Naval College history

In 1694 the English architectural heroes Christopher Wren and Nicholas Hawksmoor were approached to redesign Greenwich Palace which was at the time thought to be an eyesore. Once home to Britain&rsquo;s iconic monarchs Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, the medieval palace was a building project taken on by Charles II when he was restored to the throne in 1660. However as the finances of the notorious spendthrift waned, so did his enthusiasm for the redesign and as a result, only one new wing was actually built, forming what is now the eastern range of the King Charles Court.

In 1694 this wing and the grounds were donated by William III as a Royal Warrant to become a site for invalid and elderly soldiers and Wren and Hawksmoor were asked to help. Queen Mary had requested to preserve the view of the river from the Queen&rsquo;s House so Wren&rsquo;s final design laid out the buildings into two halves, with twin domes inspired by his recent work at St Paul&rsquo;s Cathedral. It was Hawksmoor however who carried out most of the work and drew up the working designs, as Wren&rsquo;s extensive commitments kept him too busy. Work finally commenced in 1696 to create the four courts, and to finish their creation which went on to house over 2,000 veterans of the Royal Navy.

You can take a direct train from London Paddington or Waterloo to Windsor &amp; Eton Central Station, followed by a short bus or taxi ride to the park. There&rsquo;s lots of parking on site too if you have a car and would prefer to drive.

Are there any age or height restrictions for the rides? 
Yes, some rides at LEGOLAND&reg; have age, height, or health restrictions for safety reasons. These restrictions vary depending on the ride, so we recommend checking the information boards at the entrance of each attraction.

The Royal Mews is one of the finest working stables anywhere in the world and home to the royal collection of historic coaches and carriages, and the Windsor Greys and Cleveland Bays, the horses that pull the carriages. To this day, the stables are still responsible for all road travel arrangements for His Majesty The King and other members of the Royal Family.

History of the Royal Mews

The Royal Mews has been the location of the sovereign&#39;s road transport since 1760 when George III moved his carriage collection closer to his new home at Buckingham Palace. Since then, it has been updated by several monarchs in keeping with their changing transport needs. 
 
Among the historic coaches and carriages on display are the spectacular Diamond Jubilee State Coach, and the Australian State Coach, which was given to Queen Elizabeth II as a gift from the Australian people. The most dazzling of all is the Gold State Coach, however, which has been used at every coronation since that of George IV in 1821, and which played a central role in the Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June 2022.

The Royal Mews facts

	<li>The Windsor Grey horses, used to pull the royal carriages, are so-called because they were kept at Windsor during Queen Victoria&rsquo;s reign.&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Cleveland Bays, another type of horse used to pull the carriages, are one of the oldest breeds of horses in the UK.&nbsp;</li>
	<li>The Royal stables were originally located in Charing Cross, where the National Gallery is today.&nbsp;</li>
	<li>Queen Victoria took full advantage of the ample space at the Royal Mews. She kept up to 200 horses there at one point and also set up a school for the children of its employees.</li>
	<li>The Gold State Coach weighs almost four tonnes and needs eight horses to draw it. It never moves faster than walking speed.</li>

It was known as Number 1, London because it was the first house encountered by visitors coming from the west and through Knightsbridge.Following his momentous victory at the Battle of Waterloo, Sir Arthur Wellesley, Duke of Wellington purchased the house. Apsley House grew significantly under Wellington. A three-storey extension was added to the north-east, featuring the stunning State Dining Room, new bedrooms and dressing rooms. In 1828, a brand new staircase and the opulent, striking Waterloo Gallery were added to Apsley House. Today, part of Apsley House provides a home for the current Duke of Wellington. It is London’s only aristocratic townhouse still in use today. The rest of Apsley opened as a museum in 1952. It is laid out to reflect how it looked during the time of the first Duke of Wellington’s residence.<h3>Apsley House facts</h3><ul><li>Wellington is considered one of the greatest ever British military heroes but was in fact born in Dublin, Ireland. </li><li>There are over 90 pubs named after the Duke of Wellington in the UK.</li><li>Wellington Boots gain their names from the Duke of Wellington. He wore multipurpose, customised footwear during military campaigns, which had a lower heel and more of a lining.
