Weston-super-Mare means ‘Weston-on-Sea’, and the name says it all. Originally a collection of fishing villages, this charming town grew into a fashionable resort in the 19th century thanks to the Victorian craze for sea bathing.

The first trains arrived here in 1841, and for the first ten years most carriages were pulled into town by horses; steam locomotives didn’t take over until 1851. Today, the site of the original station – designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel – is marked by a scale replica of the North Star, the first locomotive to run on the Great Western Railway.

The current station opened in 1914 and connects to important hubs in the south-west and Wales, including Bristol Temple Meads and Cardiff Central.
