On Christmas eve Clara is given a nutcracker doll by Uncle Drosselmeyer. That night she dreams that the Nutcracker is transformed into a handsome prince and together they embark on an exciting adventure. First, they defeat the sevenheaded Rat King and his army before traveling through the Snow Forest. Finally, they reach the glittering Kingdom of the Sweets where the Prince introduces Clara to the Sugar Plum Fairy. Divertissements of spectacular dances, each representing a sweet is given in her honour. The sweeping Sugar Plum pas de deux with the Prince brings the dream to a glorious close; Clara and audience will leave the Kingdom of the Sweets with Tchaikovsky’s famous score playing in their minds.

Now in its 22nd year, English Youth Ballet provides professional performance experience for talented young dancers. It has built a national reputation for the quality of both its full-length classical ballets and mixed bill programmes, winning The Stage Award – for special achievement in regional theatre. The opportunity to watch English Youth Ballet is a unique experience; sell-out audiences are treated to beautiful international principal artists sharing the stage with the top up-and-coming talent from the local area (aged 8 -18). EYB’s large cast ensures the world’s favourite ballets are performed with the scale and grandeur which was originally intended. There are now ex-EYB young performers in some of the world’s best companies – including the Royal Ballet, Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures and Joffrey Ballet.

The Princess Theatre first opened its doors on Wednesday 7 June 1961. Top of the bill on the opening night were the late, great Tommy Cooper and the legendary Morecombe & Wise. In 1963 The Beatles appeared live on stage singing the then newly released single “She Loves You” causing some hysteria in the town!
The Princess Theatre is South Devon’s largest theatre with a seating capacity of 1,491. Big musical productions that have thrilled our audiences include Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Chicago, Starlight Express, Rocky Horror, Cats, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Icons of the stage and screen Sir Roger Moore, Elaine Page, Joan Collins and the beloved Joan Rivers, have also graced our stage. Comedians Jimmy Carr, Alan Carr and Dawn French have performed here too and chart toppers Mumford & Sons, Jamie Cullum and Ronan Keating have included the theatre on their UK tours.
