Incredible read

Almost every review mentions Mac, an alpha male, as a submissive. His character IS incredible. Also mention how the book and the characters remain with you long after reading it. True. Joey W. Hill has an incredible talent in portraying emotion-packed characters and situations. After my third or fourth time reading it, I found myself wincing at what Violet put Mac through. One reviewer said she never hurt him or degraded him, but, read it again. Violet did both, rather viciously. The more I thought about it, and the more I read it, the more I wondered just what the devil Violet got after finally breaking Mac. His character was as incredibly fantastic at the beginning as he was at the end. I couldn't really see any great change in him that would have justified her treatment of him. Oddly enough, I didn't find the sex scenes as hot or as riveting as the characterizations and the movement of the story line, because with a few exceptions where they were making love, the balance was Violet putting him thru some pretty ugly things to break him. There was absolutely no question that Mac loved Violet, but I never felt that Violet really loved Mac. Oh, there was no question that she WANTED him, after all she was a newbie to the "Mistress" role and he was her first sub. Unfortunately, with each reading of the book I liked Mac more and Violet less and less and less. And yet the story and characters stayed with me and gripped me as few books have ever done. I even wanted to give the book 4 stars because of some of the horrific violence due to the murder story line, but I just couldn't do it. This is real 5 star material. Bravo Joey!

OH MY GOSH!!!!

This book goes beyond description, and I am a soon to be pub'd author! I am not 'into' BDSM, but how could I resist and ALPHA male who is a sub? I had to see if Ms. Hill could pull this off. Not only does she pull it off, she does so in a remarkable and beautiful fashion! I have to say that sometimes I find authors of Ellora's Cave books to be heavy handed with the 70's porno terminology stuffed into a romantic plot and some character development, but Hill makes all of it flow so gorgeously that you never stop, wince and go 'yikes'. Brava, Ms. Hill. I picked this up to read a few chapters before bed and next thing it was 7 am and I was finishing it off bawling my eyes out and feeling like i had a millimeter's worth of talent in comparison. I also packed it and shipped it to my best friend within the hour and will keep shipping it and touting it (I called my editor and agent about it)til I am blue in the face. Mac is sooo freakin sexy! I could eat him up with a spoon. The book is brave, bold and as out there as can be. You get the point across, you feel the difference between a lifestyle and how the lifestyle is perceived. (My only caveat was it almost got a little preachy) This is the kind of work that makes me rush out and buy every single title an author has out there. I will have you on my TBB list for life Ms. Hill. You are my first review on here after buying hundreds of items over the years. If you read this, take satisfaction in that, smile like a fat cat, and go with it girl.

Beautiful awesome story

There are not enough stars here for this book. I've never felt compelled to write a review for books, but this book is just that great that I had to gush about it. Joey W. Hill is such a gifted writer that she's able to show readers the ultimate giving of heart, body, and soul in a "non-traditional" relationship. The story of Mac and Violet is so loving and beautiful that it will melt your heart. I have read many other erotic romance books, and not one so far has come even close to the depth of emotion this book touches. Ms. Hill is able to exquisitely balance the hot sex with the tender romance. This book is so deserving of all the praises and awards it's won.

There aren't enough stars for this book! Phenomenal!

I loved this book, and I've read it again and again. It's a BDSM novel, so if you're aren't ready for that, be forewarned. But besides that (I'm not much into BDSM myself), the love story between the two main characters, Violet and Mac, is so stunning, so captivating, so touching and beautiful, not to mention sexy as can be... it's one of my very favorite novels. Violent is a Dominant, and Mac -- a sexy, hunky alpha stud homicide cop -- is a sexual submissive. Mac, investigating a serial killer, goes undercover at a BDSM club where Violet is a Mistress. They feel an immediate attraction to each other and quickly pair up. Some readers may not like the idea of a submissive male main character, but don't let that fool you. Even though he is sexually submissive, he's still a walking hunk of alpha male testosterone. The sexual pull between Violet and Mac is explosive, and Mac isn't always submissive. ;) I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a strong romance, with very well developed characters, a strong sexual story, and lots of suspense. It does contain several scenes of graphic BDSM sexual activity, so it's not for the faint hearted. But even my sister, who's VERY faint hearted, read this book and was blown away by the story of Violet and Mac. She's read it again several times, too. After reading this book, Violet and Mac will stay in your head -- as well as in your heart. The love between them feels so real -- and the romantic suspense is excellent, too. The good news is that the author, Joey Hill, has a new book coming out later this year (2005) that is a loosely related sequel to Natural Law. This new book, The Ice Queen, features an appearance by Violet and Mac. So for those of us in the Violet and Mac fan club -- and there are lots of us -- we'll get to see a bit of them again in The Ice Queen. I can't wait!!
